DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS

Indego Africa is looking for well-established groups dedicated to job-skills training, particularly those focusing on handicraft production. Indego Africa desires to undertake comprehensive partnerships whereby the local organization produces a traditional handicraft and Indego Africa supports the organization by marketing and selling the handicraft abroad.  Indego Africa handicrafts should be:

  • Distinctive
  • Attractive
  • Innovative, and
  • Culturally and/or Artistically Significant

As partners, Indego Africa and the local organization would discuss how profits made by Indego Africa would be re-invested into the activities of the local organization. Indego Africa values communication and would require that its partner organization have leadership personnel that could keep in regular contact by phone and e-mail.

If your organization meets these criteria, Indego Africa would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with our founder, Matt Mitro, by e-mail or phone (see the Contact Us page). For additional details on how to become an Indego Africa development partner organization, please refer to the Indego Africa Donation Recipient Policy and the form that the Board of Directors requires from all prospective partners, the DPO Profile Form.

Below is a summary of what Indego Africa has to offer and what we expect of our partners.

1) Equipment - Indego Africa would be willing to purchase and donate equipment and other fixed assets for the use of its partner organizations. The expectation is that these assets would be used to conduct the partner organization's skills-building and export production activities.

2) Income - Indego Africa would pay its partner artisans a per-unit advance for any exportable items that the artisans produce, which would allow them to generate income to support themselves or save towards opening their own small business enterprise. The payment of advances and a fair wage gives artisans recognition for their valuable skills. When Indego Africa sells its products in the export market, artisans take away the knowledge that their handicrafts are competitive and appealing. The leadership at Indego Africa believes that only opportunity holds back many African artisans from making a good living from their handiwork.

3) Donations of Profit - As part of its non-profit mission and legal requirements as a 501(c)(3) entity, Indego Africa would donate all profits back to its partner organizations. Donated profits include all receipts from sales (over and above costs and wages paid) and all other donations received by Indego Africa. Indego Africa specifies that these funds should be used for other skills training programs or workshops being conducted by the partner organization. In many instances, donations from Indego Africa would take the form of in-kind contributions purchased by volunteers

Image1) Permit & Licensing Assistance - Indego Africa would need assistance from the leadership at the partnership organization with the process of obtaining an export license and other permits. The process for such licenses varies by country, but Indego Africa would encourage partnership organizations to explore this process in conjunction with Indego Africa and to coordinate some of the paperwork.  Of course, Indego Africa would cover any costs involved.

2) Export Production Schedules - Indego Africa would expect that a certain number of artisans or hours per week are devoted to making high-quality export products. Indego Africa will attract customers and donors primarily by using grass-roots and internet-based marketing methods.  Its strategy derives both from its mission to keep costs reasonable and to give its consumers and its artisans access to next-generation sales and marketing. As part of this process, artisans and the partner organizations that support them need to meet agreed-upon schedules for production and delivery. Indego Africa will discuss a plan with the artisans to achieve this goal while remaining flexible.  Indego Africa considers this expectation to be part of the learning process for artisans as well.

3) General Cooperation - It is critical that the leadership and artisans at the partner organization are open to questions and requests that Indego Africa may have from time-to-time. For instance, Indego Africa may require that its in-country volunteers interview the artisans about their experiences for purposes of US tax reporting and for marketing the handicraft products abroad.  Indego Africa also is responsible for directing and controlling how its donated profits are managed by its partner organizations. It is important both that Indego Africa conveys the reasons for making such requests and maintains an open and cooperative relationship.

* Indego Africa is a federal 501(c)(3) public charity recognized by the IRS and a registered Texas non-profit corporation.  All donations by U.S. residents are tax deductible for the donors' federal income taxes.
