INDEGO AFRICA PARTNER: COVANYA OF NYAMATA

Indego Africa began its partnership with Covanya, a weaving cooperative with 23 members in Nyamata, Rwanda in August 2007. The women at Covanya weave the stunning agaseke basket ornaments (CLICK TO BUY) and plateau baskets (CLICK TO BUY), which can take 4-5 days to make and require constant attention to detail. Before partnering with Indego Africa, more than 85% of the women at Covanya supported an average family of six on $0.50 per day. They now earn four times that much. In addition, in July 2008 Indego Africa installed a comprehensive computer center at Covanya, where the women now enjoy a variety of skill-based training programs - to read more, click to read the BLOG POST.

Age: 51

Thacianna, a widow supporting her three children and three orphans, is President of Covanya. Because of Indego Africa, Thacianna has opened a bank account. She walks 10km by foot each day from Nyagihumika to get to Covanya.
