INDEGO AFRICA'S SUMMER FUNDRAISERS

Indego Africa is excited to present its schedule of Summer 2009 fundraisers.  We're offering a variety of ways for you to get involved and show your support.  Now reaching more people in more cities across the United States, Indego Africa is bringing the message of hope and opportunity for Rwandan women to an even wider audience.  With the 15th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide this April 2009, you're encouraged both to remember and to celebrate - Rwanda and Indego Africa are moving forward.  Please join us!

CHICAGO, IL - JUNE 18, 2009

When: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 7-10pm

Where: Mars Gallery, 1139 West Fulton Market, Phone: (312) 226-7808, click for MAP

Tickets: $40 in advance (now closed), $50 at the door

The very first Indego Africa event in Chicago will exhibit firsthand the progress you are helping our Rwandan partner artisans make; striking photography and rich personal accounts from our senior officers will tell the story. Additionally, there will be plenty of fun as we celebrate in the uniquely beautiful Mars Gallery with food, drink and live music. Dawi Williams, a longtime regular in Chicago’s jazz scene will be leading the sounds for the evening.

Beyond that, we are hosting a raffle and silent auction with items representative of Chicago’s native and varied offerings: everything from professional sports and theater tickets to original art to restaurant and spa certificates—even a (nonnative) snowboard!

Ticket sales for this event will do so much to support our Rwandan artisans, working at last for fair wages, studying with the help of partner tutors, exploring the world through newly secured computer labs, and steadily moving from poverty to self-sufficiency.  Please share this invitation with anyone who might be interested in supporting a noble and pioneering cause. Thank you for your contribution.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA - FEBRUARY 24, 2009

Keynote Address, University of California - Irvine's Center for Unconventional Security Affairs

"Harnessing Global Trade to Promote Human Security: Social Entrepreneurship & the Indego Africa Model"

Indego Africa's President and Founder, Matt Mitro, will be delivering an address to the Coalition Advocating Human Security, a project of the University of California - Irvine's Center for Unconventional Security Affairs.  A brief abstract:

"Connecting the poor with global markets presents a real opportunity for empowerment, both economic and social. Local markets often fail to appropriately value specialty goods from developing countries, handicrafts being a particularly good example. Export market access can remedy that deficit and provide critical income to the poor, yet there are significant barriers to entry in the export market - from language and commercial experience to shipping costs and government regulations. Matt Mitro will discuss how social enterprises like Indego Africa, a developing hybrid form of non-profit and for-profit entities, are employing fair trade practices and implementing education programs that both safeguard income and generate long-term skills - both critical components of human security."
