BENEFITS OF BUYING FROM INDEGO AFRICA

When customers make a purchase from Indego Africa, they get an exclusive and practical product together with the peace of mind and confidence that come from supporting a 501(c)(3) non-profit and its charitable mission. Customers enjoy both the vibrant creative flourishes and pragmatic applications featured in Indego Africa handicrafts. For instance, the wine coasters made by artisans at Cocoki come in non-uniform designs and unique cloth patterns, having been crafted by hand to the criteria imagined by the artisan. The ability to attach the Indego Africa coasters to a wine glass appeals to consumers looking for something innovative.

Similarly, the motifs used on Indego Africa baskets from Rwanda tell a traditional story of importance to Rwanda and the weavers. The lid and base of the agaseke baskets fit together perfectly, providing a place to hide everyday objects and giving a clean look to your home. The flat plateau basket offers an incredible flexibility of design and limitless creative possibilities for the artisan.

Indego Africa consumers seek to ensure that products they buy are fairly-produced and fairly-traded. A number of respected organizations certify that production methods and conditions comport with commonly-accepted fair trade principles. When possible, Indego Africa products will be independently certified as fairly-traded by such organizations. Please see our Fair Trade Practices page for more information.

With each purchase from Indego Africa, customers have the chance to directly benefit African artisans and help rebuild communities and lives. The women are not asking for hand-outs or sympathy, but simply asking consumers to decide to do a bit more with their next purchase. We do our part, donating 100% of profits back to our partner cooperatives for training programs.

Consumers are attracted by the opportunity to purchase African products that they cannot find anywhere other than through Indego Africa. Our artisans are designing products for export exclusively by Indego Africa. Many partner communities have not traditionally exported, or even sold, their products.

Some of our products, particularly the agaseke and plateau baskets, are renowed worldwide. The agaseke style and shape is unique to Rwanda, requiring patience and great skill to master. All the larger Rwandan baskets take four to five days to weave. Our team has ventured across Africa in their careers and have never found baskets of higher quality. Each Indego Africa handicraft is one-of-a-kind item.

Indego Africa sells more than a product. Our consumers are equally interested in the story behind our community partners. The compelling narrative attached to each product (available on product tags and the website) educates consumers about energetic communities that they may know very little about. The community’s persistence and the artisan’s handiwork is inspiring given their often difficult circumstances. Indego Africa tries to feature the handicraft design and production process, including any historical significance or impact of the product. Because each Indego Africa product is unique, other people notice them and customers have the chance to tell the story of Indego Africa and its artisans.

Consumers enjoy greater peace of mind and confidence when buying from Indego Africa, a 501(c)(3) charity. Together with a distinctive design and compelling story, Indego Africa products offer the opportunity to participate in a non-profit mission of development. Indego Africa offers unrivalled transparency in its business operations and a commitment to the highest standards of ethical business practices (see the Transparency & Ethics page). You are invited to participate with Indego Africa as a faithful and trustworthy partner in the process of helping the less fortunate.

Indego at the Oscars

Indego Africa's wine coasters and agaseke baskets were featured at the 2008 Academy Awards as part of the "Gifting for a Cause" gift bags given to more than 70 celebrities, such as April Scott of CSI: Miami (above). The gift suites are "exclusive and very selective" and Indego Africa's participation reflected their mission of "devis[ing] a gift that was trendsetting, philanthropic, multicultural and of personal interest to the celebrities."
