Indego Africa

Madirishya Plateau

$68.00

The Madirishya is a limited-edition design created by refugee artisans in honor of World Refugee Day. Asinati N. and her group named their design 'Madirishya' which means 'The Windows' in Kinyarwanda.

Asinati is based in the Kigeme Refugee Camp and a member of the Igisubizo or IGZ Cooperative. Their cooperative name means 'solutions', as that is what they hope to be for their community.  In 2023 she joined an interactive design workshop and brought her vision to life. Each original design in the HOPE Collection is a labor of love and an expression of hope.

The artisan sector is the second largest employer in the developing world. Yet the majority of artisans are women who lack access to export markets, business skills, and the financial tools needed to run successful global enterprises.

We are dedicated to changing that by investing 100% of our profits into education programs for the women who handcraft our products and youth in their communities. Since 2007, we've provided over 1,100 artisans and 250 young people in Rwanda & Ghana with employment opportunities, entrepreneurship training, and consistent access to the global export market.

  • Sisal requires minimal care due to it's strength.
  • We recommend keeping bright colors away from direct sunlight and trimming any stray fibers that may appear over time.

Our Promise

Local + Sustainable

Local is durable. We strive to be environmentally responsible in the production of all our products. We use a range of natural fibers indigenous to the countries where we work, sourcing our materials from local markets and farms where our partners live and work. Materials that cannot be sourced locally are sourced consciously, prioritizing pan-African trade, quality and sustainability.

Celebrating Craftsmanship

Craft Matters. Each of our products, from weaving to woodcarving, is handcrafted using time-honored, heritage techniques. We collaborate with our artisan partners to create products that celebrate their talent, share the beauty of traditional African artistry, and showcase our dedication to high-quality, modern design. Our artisan partners take pride in creating our handmade products, and their skill ensures the reliable quality of our brand.

Transparent Partnerships

Our artisan partners work with us, not for us. We build long-term transparent partnerships, working collaboratively to determine fair pricing and ensure they have the resources to deliver beautiful and consciously crafted products to consumers around the world. Together, our partners make up 23+ primarily women-owned artisan businesses in Rwanda, Ghana, and Refugee Camps.

Long-Term Impact

Our artisan partners have big dreams and big plans. We invest in their education because we believe in their ability to achieve (and exceed) their goals. We entrust our partners with the innovative designs, advanced skills training, and the market access needed to start careers and grow their own businesses. When women are financially and emotionally supported, they become powerful engines of growth for their families and communities.
