Trauma-informed wellness programming

Since 2017, we’ve partnered with AZAHAR Foundation to bring their trauma informed wellness programming to our artisan partners in Rwanda. The mental and physical health benefits our partners experience range from alleviating back pain to releasing stored trauma as survivors of genocide.

The benefits of this program are undeniable; the challenge we face is scale.

Currently, only 2 of the 17 artisan cooperatives Indego Africa collaborates with are able to participate at any given time - and access is limited to those based near Kigali.

The Practice

AZAHAR’s program is inspired by BREATH-BODY-MIND, a doctor developed practice uniting evidence-based science with traditional wisdom to enhance physical and mental health with proven benefits for addressing stress, trauma and physical strain in the body.

these techniques are particularly powerful for addressing the negative effects of repetitive movements experienced by many craft workers and long periods of sitting - be that in a workshop or at your desk!

Train the Trainers

Each year we receive numerous requests for this programming; but both organizations lack the capacity to meet the demand using our current model. By training women in each cooperative to become trainers themselves, we can extend our reach to all of our cooperatives and their commuities within 2 years - increasing our impact 10 fold.

Program Benefits

Enhance accessibility of mind-body practices

Empower local communities with the tools for long term health

Increase mental health awareness and peace-based education

AZAHAR RWANDA

AZAHAR means orange blossom. This word comes from Spanish but has roots in Arabic. Its mixed origin illustrates the fusion of different cultures and mirrors the foundation’s dedication to embracing diversity. A and Z are the alphabet’s initial and final letters, symbolizing starts, finishes, entirety, specifics, and emptiness. A blossom signifies fresh starts and an elevated consciousness where people can coexist harmoniously, embodying the AZAHAR Foundation’s ultimate vision.

With deep roots in Cambodia, AZAHAR's expansion into Rwanda came in 2016. A partnership between Yogeswari and Jeanine Munyeshuli saw the inception of a transformative program in Rwanda. This initiative aimed to bring healing and hope to genocide survivors through the power of yoga, in collaboration with local NGOs like Indego Africa.
