As an organization committed to deep engagement in the communities we work in, our local team in Rwanda was in touch with our artisan partners throughout the lockdown to help address the effects the pandemic was having on their lives. In mid-April, our Rwandan team conducted a Covid-19 survey by phone with 40 women from eight different cooperatives across the country including two cooperatives at the Mahama and Kigeme Refugee Camps.

Since 2016, Indego has been helping Burundian and Congolese refugees in Rwanda improve their livelihoods and build long-term careers in the global artisan industry by integrating them into our global supply chain and investing in their education.

This Mother’s Day, we at Indego Africa are celebrating the resilient moms we work with and how they invest in their families by investing in themselves.

Today marks 26 years since the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. We commemorate those whose lives were brutally disrupted by the Rwandan genocide and who continue to endure the effects of those tragic events today. On this day of remembrance, we also want to recognize the incredible progress that Rwanda has made over the past two decades.

Our signature sweetgrass baskets are both a celebration of traditional Rwandan weaving using locally-sourced, natural materials, and a direct collaboration with artisans who benefit from Indego’s market-driven approach to women’s empowerment.
